Get Relief From a Variety of Conditions with a Sitz Bath
A sitz bath, or hip bath, is a tub-shaped bath which fits only the hips, abdominal area and buttocks, while the upper body and legs are outside the bath. It is a more convenient way to target the pelvic area than sitting in a conventional bath. The sitz bath is an old European tradition that is now used to ease the pain and discomfort of several medical conditions.
The treatment is widely accepted by alternative health practitioners and those who prefer to limit their use of prescription medication.
The water in a sitz bath may be hot, warm or cold, depending on the condition being treated, and sometimes additives are mixed with the water. Sometimes the bath is balanced on a toilet or in a normal bath to catch any overflow of water. Some sitz baths have a vent, to allow excess water to be released slowly.
The most common conditions that respond well to soaking in a warm sitz bath include hemorrhoids, anal fissures, genital herpes, uterine cramps, vaginal yeast infections and episiotomy. A hot sitz bath will give relief from prostate pain, and a cool bath is recommended for inflammation, vaginal discharge and constipation.
Some of the ingredients that are suggested as additives for a sitz bath include baking soda for dry or itchy skin, jock itch and chicken pox. Oatmeal will relieve the itchy rashes like poison ivy and poison oak. Vinegar relieves the irritation of sunburn and psoriasis; Epsom salts are added for arthritis, inflammation and painful hemorrhoids; cup each of salt and vinegar will help ease the discomfort of vaginal yeast infections and also help to return the Ph of the area to normal; specific essential oils can give relief to a variety of conditions.
Safety around water is very important - be careful using hot water, and always add hot water to cold to get the correct temperature. Make sure the floor is covered with a mat to prevent slipping on water overflow or splashes, and ensure that the temperature of the bathroom is warm to avoid getting cold when you get out of the bath. Avoid staying in the sitz bath too long; relief should be felt after about ten minutes and you should never soak in a bath for more than thirty minutes a day. Two or three short baths to relieve your symptoms would be preferable to one long bath. Warm to hot baths can be dehydrating, so make sure you drink plenty of water before and after your sitz bath.
