Hemorrhoids Symptoms And Ways To Find Relief

Hemorrhoids symptoms can be varied and will depend on the type of hemorrhoid you suffer from. There are both external and internal hemorrhoids and the severity can range for one to four stages. Hemorrhoids are basically masses of tissues that swell dues to inflamed blood vessels. They are found in the anal canal. Everyone has hemorrhoids it is only when they enlarge that they can cause problems.

The four stages of hemorrhoids are as followed; first degree are bleeding hemorrhoids that do not prolapse, second degree hemorrhoids prolapse and retract on their own, third degree hemorrhoids prolapse but cannot be pushed back in with a finger and fourth degree hemorrhoids that prolapse and cannot be pushed back in.

An internal hemorrhoid is a hemorrhoid that originated at the top of the anal canal and an external hemorrhoid occurs at the lower end of the anal canal. There are typically three different major hemorrhoidal cushions in the body the right posterior, left lateral and right anterior. When the hemorrhoid swells the tissue can protrude into the anal canal causing pain, itching and even bleeding.

The actual cause of hemorrhoids is unknown though they are thought to be caused by inadequate fiber intake, chronic straining during bowel movements, prolonged sitting on the toilet and pregnancy to name a few. It is thought that over time the hemorrhoid will become lose from its position and eventually slide in to the anal canal for prolonged aggravation, though the actual mechanism is unknown.

There are nerves in the anal canal and they can sense both pain and pressure. The somatic nerves sense pain and the visceral nerves sense pressure. Internal hemorrhoids normally are not associated with pain because the visceral nerves are the closest ones and they do not sense pain. Pain can be associated with bowel movements as the hemorrhoid is obstructing the anal canal.

When the hemorrhoid enlarges is also can pull a section of the rectus lining with it. This can cause an increased production of mucus and some stool leakage onto the anal skin, which causes anal itchiness. Incarcerated hemorrhoids or hemorrhoids that cannot be pushed back into the anus can develop gangrene and this will need to be surgically removed.

External hemorrhoids tend to have different symptoms then those described above for internal hemorrhoids. External hemorrhoids are like bulges in the anus and are not as problematic as internal hemorrhoids. However if a blood clot develops in an external hemorrhoid this can be painful as there are somatic nerve sin the area.

There are many different types of treatment for hemorrhoids. There are some general self-care methods that are used to treat the symptoms of hemorrhoids that include ice packs for swelling, warm baths, eating al lot of fiber and drinking a lot of water, using laxatives and stool softeners. There are also surgical options for more sever hemorrhoids generally those in the 3rd and 4th stage. Most times hemorrhoids can be treated without surgery and it is only when non-operative procedures fail that any surgical treatment should be considered.
